Insights in Nutrition and Metabolism: obesity and metabolic disease


Journal of Insights in Nutrition and Metabolism is an open-access scholarly journal focused on publishing articles in all aspects of integrative fields Nutrition, Metabolism, and their related disorders.

Among human diseases based on defect in metabolism of food components, there are cases for which no drug therapy is applicable and dietary restriction constitutes the unique therapy. Accumulation of metabolites or not metabolized compounds determines troubles at different levels, so that a toxic effect is due to a molecule that is innocuous for healthy people.

Obesity is a condition in which the natural energy reserve, stored in the fatty tissue of humans and other mammals, is increased to a point where it is a risk factor for certain health conditions or increased mortality.

In the clinical setting, obesity is typically evaluated by measuring BMI (body mass index), waist circumference, and evaluating the presence of risk factors and comorbidities.

Obesity develops from the interaction of individual biology and the environment. Excessive body weight has been shown to predispose to various diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus type 2, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis.

A metabolic disorder occurs when the metabolism process fails and causes the body to have either too much or too little of the essential substances needed to stay healthy.

Metabolic disorders can take many forms a missing enzyme or vitamin that’s necessary for an important chemical reaction, abnormal chemical reactions that hinder metabolic processes and disease in the liver, pancreas, endocrine glands, or other organs involved in metabolism. Metabolic disorders can be present at birth, and many can be identified by routine screening.

If a metabolic disorder is not identified early, then it may be diagnosed later in life, when symptoms appear. Specific blood and DNA tests can be done to diagnose genetic metabolic disorders.

The gut microbiota, which is a population of microorganisms that live in the human digestive system, also has an important part in metabolism and generally has a positive function for its host.

Instead, in order to live healthy, the human organism has to intake in balanced quantities the macronutrients, i.e., carbohydrates, fatty and proteins, together with vitamins and minerals, in most cases conjugated to macronutrients. So healthy nutrition presupposes that proteins cannot be excluded from a balanced diet, unless doctor’s prescription.

The diet and nutrition cannot become a trendy affair and should be strongly recommended to avoid dietary choices not correctly defined by experts.

The Journal will also publish papers concerned implements integration of nutrition, exercise physiology, clinical investigations, and molecular and cellular biochemistry of metabolism.
