Food to be formulated as nutritional bar

Cardio metabolic disruptions include diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. These are intimately related with the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS), which confers a 2 to 2.5-fold increase in the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and death.

In Mexico, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and therefore cardio metabolic disruptions, is high (27-41%), whilst the prevalence of abdominal obesity is up to 73.9%. The treatment requires lifestyle changes, and in most cases pharmacological treatment for each of the diseases that enclose MetS. Pharmacological treatment has the disadvantage of producing adverse effects that may lead to poor tolerance and compliance for the long-term use. Dietary treatment has no secondary effects and several studies have been conducted to correlate the beneficial effects of food due to the presence of diverse phytochemicals, which are food compounds that exhibit biological actions and exerts therapeutical potential, such as prevention and/or treatment of cardio metabolic disruptions.

Some examples of foods with high phytochemical content are nopal, amaranth and the oyster mushroom.

Due to the necessity to formulate new therapeutic strategies for diseases such as dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, obesity and other cardio metabolic diseases, it would be important to evaluate the effect of the aforementioned foods formulated as a nutritional bar.
